About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Long out of print since its 1971 release on Rolling Stones Records, this stunning classic, recently made available again, is a glimpse into a primordial, shrieking world of ancient blood rites, trance rituals, and a throbbing, unfettered fertility -- the world of Morocco's Berber mystics. Under the guidance of beatnik Brion Gysin, the Stones' guitarist Brain Jones trekked into the Rif Mountains to record these Master musicians and their thousand-year-old wail. Protected by royalty for centuries, this drum and reed corps riveted generations of wide-eyed (and drug-addled) wanderers from Europe and America. Jones processed their melodies through acid-era studio effects that heighten their transportive qualities, if rendering them less pure than, say, Bill Laswell's APOCALYPSE ACROSS THE SKY, recorded decades later. But it's BRIAN JONES PRESENTS that captures a very special time and place, when adventurous kids, stoned on the idea that anything was possible, first found a gateway to the beyond among the pastoral people of a little mountain village deep in the heart of Morocco. November 20, 2002: If I'm "stupid and divise", what does that make the dude who gave this 3 stars? A peace-loving cultured genius? As I said, I listened to this CD in hopes of hearing Brian Jones. Am I stupid for being disappointed that even though his name is on it, he doesn't play on it? Also, for being a "damn good album," Mr. Cultured Genius, you only gave it 3 stars. Not a very strong defense, eh? In the meantime, know the difference between judging albums and judging people. We'll all be a lot happier if you do.

February 12, 2002: It's a damn good album...No, it's not rock and roll, but that in no way should be condemnable of itself. These guys are playing a music that is heavier than any rock and roll, yet light and full of joy....It's worse than foolish to put down things you don't understand,Matsso of Matasso's Restaurant, it's stupid and divisive.
