Thankful, Kelly Clarkson's slightly underwhelming 2003 debut, could've marked the end of the first-season American Idol champ's 15 minutes of fame. But with her angst-filled, rock-edged sophomore disc, Breakaway, a sexier, more confident Clarkson proves she has staying power. This girl-next-door captured the A.I. crown by belting goose bumpinducing renditions of R&B classics ("Natural Woman") and adult contemporaryleaning power ballads (the single "A Moment Like This"), yet Thankful failed to capitalize on Clarkson's hazel-eyed soul, instead settling for Pink-reminiscent pop. But with the popularity of rock-lite chicks Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne, it's a smart move for the raspy-piped Clarkson to wail -- more convincingly -- on guitar-fueled girl power anthems and disaffected love songs. The inspiring title track (originally featured on the Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack) and the new-wavy kiss-off "Since U Been Gone" will certainly strike a chord with tween and teen girls everywhere. With the star-making Breakaway, Clarkson is still America's favorite pop idol. Tracy E. Hopkins, Barnes & Noble
