Editorial Reviews

With a title suggesting that it will be a movie concerning an attempt to break the land speed record, Bonneville is instead a domestic drama about a middle-aged widow on a road trip across the American West (in a mid-1960's circa Pontiac Bonneville car) with two female friends to spread the ashes of her husband. The soundtrack album is split between eight songs used as source music and seven cues from Jeff Cardoni's score. The songs are a miscellaneous selection of old (Donovan) and new (Amos Lee, Pete Droge) folkies, plus some Latin-tinged material, and, oddly, a version of "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" by Lazlo Bane that copies the hit version by Three Dog Night. (Maybe the original was too pricey?) Cardoni's score seems to have been intended to accompany the poignant moments in the film. The music plays at slow or deliberate tempos. Sustained strings (or string-like synthesized sounds) dominate, with plucked guitar and single-note piano playing, heavily echoed. William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
