Boney James's excellent 1997 release SWEET THING, was a tough album to follow up, but the L.A.-based saxophonist has done it admirably with his new release, BODY LANGUAGE. James has a talent for creating intricate, highly textural compositions, and although that talent is amply in evidence here, he decided to mix things up a bit stylistically. James teams with an orchestra on the rich, funky "Lovefest" and the swooping "Into the Blue," turns jazzy and atmospheric on "Bedtime Story," and demonstrates his R&B roots on "I'll Always Love You," featuring the vocal group Shai. He applies the trademark Boney James seductive burnish to the sinuous title track, and, on "Boneyism," he and fellow smooth jazz star, trumpeter Rick Braun, turn in a sultry duet. Another very fine album by a very fine player, BODY LANGUAGE speaks to the listener's heart, mind, and flesh. Lucy Tauss, Barnes & Noble
