About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Despite his tremendous output in virtually every genre popular in his time, Luigi Boccherini is remembered today for only a handful of his works. In the realm of cello concertos, he is most often remembered for the "B flat major Concerto" that is typically performed as an arrangement (some would say mutilation) written by Grützmacher. This Teldec album (in its third release) offers listeners something that as of yet may still be unfamiliar: four of Boccherini's cello concertos (the only four published during his lifetime) performed without alteration to the score. This set was recorded in 1965 by Anner Bylsma -- who, despite his successful forays into Romantic and twentieth century works, is still most closely associated with masterful, true-to-the-score performances of earlier cello works -- and the Concerto Amsterdam under Jaap Schroder. The longevity of this recording and its multiple releases speaks volumes about its quality. Bylsma's pristine technique, immaculate intonation, and academic understanding of the score lets Boccherini's music speak for itself without the frequent arrangements to which it is often subjected. Boccherini's own virtuosity on the cello becomes even more apparent after listening to this set, and why Grützmacher's hacking of the "B flat Concerto" has been chosen for immortality over these is anyone's guess. Sure to delight ardent cello fans as well as casual listeners, this album will certainly make a welcome addition to any collection. ~ Mike D. Brownell, All Music Guide All Music Guide
