Although Van Morrison's first solo album is remembered for containing the immortal pop hit "Brown Eyed Girl," Blowin' Your Mind! is actually a dry run for his masterpiece, Astral Weeks. Songs like "Who Drove the Red Sports Car" look to that song cycle, even as "Midnight Special" nods to Morrison's R&B past. But it's the agonizing "T.B. Sheets" -- all nine-plus minutes of it -- that dominates this record and belies its trendy title and pop association. "T.B. Sheets" takes the blues and reinvents it as noble tragedy and humiliating mortality. It's where Van Morrison emerges as an artist. [Blowin' Your Mind! was superseded in 1991 by Bang Masters, which contains all of its tracks except "He Ain't Give You None," presented in an alternate take, plus Morrison's other recordings for Bang.] William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

January 25, 2004: Either this release or the "Bang Masters" is probably the best presentation of Van Morrison's post-Them and pre-"Astral Weeks" songs. At least Sony put some money into the packaging and sound quality; too bad Sony and other companies have been so nakedly greedy in releasing this material in so many forms. If you want to hear what Van sounded like during this period, this may be the disc to get. But be warned that Van was still searching for his voice at this time, figuratively speaking if not literally, and that "Astral Weeks" and nearly every other album that would follow is superior. The two standout tracks: The bouncy "Brown-Eyed Girl," which still sounds decent after all these years, and the monumentally nasty "T.B. Sheets," in which Van seems to be telling a sick lover that he has better things to do than hang around her misery!
