December 06, 2003: “Inhale peace, exhale joy…” Who gave this woman such a voice, trailing contemporary artists Jill Scott, D'Angelo and Angie Stone? Yahzarah rides the Neo Soul wave—a sound combination of Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. She also sounds as if she’s belted a couple notes for a Sunday church service or two. “He loves me, He loves me not…” When I saw her video, on BET for the first time, she beckoned my heart with the song called, wishing, from her debut CD entitled, “Blackstar”. I couldn’t believe her vibe. I hadn’t seen that much cool since hip-hop group Diggable Planets hit the air waves. I hadn’t heard that much get-up & go soul since Aretha Franklin’s Rock Steady song. Yahzarah’s lyrics on this album are complemented with exquisite background music. Her words are poetic and she wails with unrestrained honesty. Track #1 is a Spoken Word delivery; that fully explains her name, telling audiences to, “Get it right, y’all!” Among my favorites are Track 1 “…Brother can you feel me? You pickin’ up the light I’m sendin’ out?” & Track 16 (a remix of the blackstar theme song). This music is all mood swing on love found, experienced and then gone. It is a moving memoir. Caution!: It might take a while to develop the taste for her potion, but once you get reeled into Yahzarah’s mesmerizing vocals you won’t know how such fresh sound hit you.
