About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer (Gladiator), has written another zesty score for director Ridley Scott -- this time for the action drama Black Hawk Down, based on the heroic efforts of an elite group of U.S. soldiers sent into Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993 as a part of a United Nations peacekeeping operation. The opening track, "Hunger," is typical of Zimmer's dramatic score, utilizing to haunting effect a blending of both African and American music. It's one of four tracks featuring acclaimed Senegalese artist Baaba Maal. Traditional rhythms and indigenous vocalizing are reinterpreted through modern technology, exemplifying musically the clash of cultures at the heart of the story. The North African gimbre, a cumbus guitar from Morocco, and Japanese taiko drums lend a textural richness to the score, which in pieces such as "Vale of Plenty" can be nightmarish, mournful, and beautiful. Algerian world-beat artist Rachid Taha performs "Barra Barra," and Lisa Gerrard, who collaborated with Zimmer on Gladiator, lends her haunting vocals to "Gortoz A Ran -- J'Attends." From the pulsating beats of "Chant" to "Minstrel Boy," an album exclusive from Joe Strummer of the Clash (heard over the closing titles of the movie), this a rewarding, multilayered musical experience. June 26, 2003: The CD for this movie is amazing. How Zimmer puts both the American and East African touch to the score is phenomenal. It really makes you "feel" musically what the soldiers went through and some of their emotions. My favs are Barra Barra, and Tribal War. If you're a fan of the movie, the CD is a must-have.
