About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

As a songwriter and singer, Meshell Ndegéocello is the closest thing the '90s has to a '70s era Bill Withers. Tracing his career arc into mellower territory, Ndegeocello approaches BITTER with a new attitude -- not to mention a new producer, Craig Street, who's better known for producing vocalists like k.d. lang and Cassandra Wilson than all-purpose singer/funkateers. BITTER focuses on the warmth and resonance of her voice, and her work here de-emphasizes the intense grooves and fiery, pansexual attitude of her first two albums in favor of quieter, more personal material with prominent, tasteful guitar playing. Her vocal model for a lot of these songs is ballad-mode Jimi Hendrix; in fact, the centerpiece of the disc is an airy cover of his "May This Be Love." Her own songs have a melancholy about them this time, but when she revs up her bass, the joy comes shining through. Douglas Wolk, Barnes & Noble

March 21, 2005: At a time when I thought life was falling apart and that I could no longer go on, this album taught me to love again. Some artists know not what thier music can do to listener, yet evokes love, passion, anger, and most of all inspiration to one's soul.

October 10, 2004: MeShell speaks of love the way I wish we did everyday. No matter if it appears to be about romantic love, it is more then what we imagine as the typical “love song". She writes about love but does not privilege herself. Instead she makes herself appear vulnerable and to some, even weak, writing as if it were only her in a discussion with her soul. There is so much heart in her music that it overwhelms you, threatens to move you and perhaps rearrange you, but there is also so much courage there. You wish you could transform always as you do listening to her music. Andromeda and the Milka Way, or Liq. Moon, Faithful, and Pocketbook all belong to a collection of sexy, strong, loving music that you have no choice but to adore.
