The Charlie Hunter Trio's album Bing, Bing, Bing!is the brainchild of a modern breed of young jazzeteers. This new jazz incorporates the sounds of Hawaiian pop, Latin salsa, and street funk; the intent is to erase the notion of jazz as purely cerebral music. "Wornell's Yorkies" is a perfect example; it sidles up alongside the listener with its faux bossa nova arrangement and inquisitive tenor sax play to create a tune whose beats could shake up a storm in any club. Jazz meets grunge in the trio's version of the Kurt Cobain-penned "Come as You Are," in which Hunter's eight-string guitar delineates the vocals of the late Nirvana front man, while the backing musicians double-time the groove behind him. Bing, Bing, Bing!speaks volumes for the way modern jazz is going. So buy, buy, buy. Chiedo Nkwocha, Barnes & Noble
