A collection for all seasons.by WJM

July 27, 2009: Not a day goes by that I do not find myself wandering into that section of my musical library now gracefully occupied by this compilation. Divided into six thematic discs - Uplifting, Relaxing, Vocal, Golden, Favorite, and Spiritual - the collection includes all of those tracks that we know and love, to those that we recognize but cannot identify, all the way to those tracks about which we had unfortunately forgotten. For example, disc one contains such favorites as the conclusion to Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture", Bach's "Tocatta in D Minor", and the graduation-day heirloom "Pomp and Circumstance", while disc four includes "Cavatina" (the theme from the 1978 film, "The Deer Hunter"), a stunning rendition of James Horner's "My Heart Will Go On", and Vaughan Williams's take on "Greensleaves"; here, vastly different works exist side by side, while never feeling forced or artificially arranged, despite that all too common effect of compilations such as this. If you have been disappointed by other musical anthologies in the past, I would urge you to reconsider your aversion by giving these discs a chance - after all, even if one were to find issue, the value in terms of cost for quality is outstanding.

In addition, I have two side notes. Firstly, EMI has also published other '100 Best' compilations, with themes ranging from the Baroque to Piano, so explore those if you are looking for a more thematically coherent collection. Secondly, fans of Sarah Brightman's various albums will be pleasantly surprised to find many of the original works that served as her inspirations.

My highest recommendation to all listeners, as there truly is something for everybody on these discs. Also, do not simply skip to those tracks with which you are familiar; let each disc play, and you are sure to discover new gems along the way.

July 19, 2009: My son loves classical music. This variety and the number of disks in the set make it great for listening to at home or in the car.
