About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Eccentric and quirky are the best ways to describe the Eels' debut effort, Beautiful Freak. Concise pop tunes form the backbone of the album, yet tinges of despair and downright meanness surface just when you've been lulled into thinking this is another pop group, as titles like "My Beloved Monster," "Your Lucky Day In Hell" and "Novocaine for the Soul" indicate. All in all, Beautiful Freak is a satisfying first record. James Chrispell, All Music Guide

Outstanding (Couldn't Think of a Title)by Anonymous

February 08, 2005: I found this CD in an old crate my aunt's boyfriend had thrown a bunch of old Cd's in. Beautiful Freak lay amid such travesties as a Paula Abdul effort, an REM misfit, and other such works that sat at the bottom of music's greasy trash can. I saw the cover of this album and laughed to think of how awful this CD probably was. Oddly enough (not really), I was blown away. This was, I hated to admit it, really good. It had a bittersweet quality laced with just enough anger to make it an instant classic in my book and any respectable music lover out there has no reason to disagree. It's so weird yet it makes so much sense it's...I could go on for days this CD is just (to use the word twice) outstanding in every sense. I recognized "My Beloved Monster" from Shrek and found that this was not even close to being the only good song. Every song is good it's...I'll stop there. Forget that almost no one knows who these guys are, buy this CD and quick, it's pure genius.

February 27, 2004: Man this was my first cd ever I remember I had to walk to the cd store cause I wasn't old enough to drive, but this was my first cd and it was magnificent. All the tracks are well put together and it really puts you in this place when listening to the songs. I have to say Mental is one of my favorite tracks and so is Flower
