About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

By all rights, the Motor City madman should have graduated from being the punk to being the godfather decades ago. But rather than rest on his laurels, the progenitor of rock as contact sport has continued to thrash along, melding brain and brawn into a visceral hybrid that's virtually peerless in these post-postmodern times. After pausing to ponder his mortality on the mostly acoustic Avenue B, Iggy is once again defying it on this tough-talking, hard-rocking set, which comes as close to his Stooges days as anything he's done in years. From the stripped-down snarl of "Jerk" (on which he calls out a predator with the temerity to hit on his date) to the hypnotic three-chord throb of the 12-minute "V.I.P.," Beat 'em Up is Iggy at his most primal. It's evident that he's pissed off -- at both the people he has to work with (who get skewered in the smirking "Weasels") and the landscape that threatens to close in on him (the topic of the anti-Los Angeles screed "Mask"). His bandmates offer plenty of well-muscled support without ever threatening to seize the spotlight from the Ig, although there's more than enough thump in the grooves to crack weaker crania like so many piñatas. File this one under: All Killer, No Filler. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble

July 18, 2001: This is the heaviest, rawest and angriest Iggy Pop album ever. I love it. Loud guitars, driving bass and clever lyrics make this one a keeper. Not the kind of record your typical 54-year old musician creates. It won't get any airplay, but it's obvious Iggy does not care. He makes music for himself, not what he thinks people want to hear. It really makes up for the somber ''Avenue B''. If you never saw Iggy live you are missing out on what he really is all about - a great entertainer. Catch his tour and buy this CD!
