A longtime gospel favorite since its founding some 30 years ago, the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir turns in another tour de force with Be Glad. As its name implies, Be Glad is an overwhelmingly positive affair, with songs expressing joy, encouragement, and thanksgiving. Remarkably enough, the choir began recording just days after the September 11th terrorist attacks, in which a number of Brooklyn Tabernacle Church members lost their lives. But as the choir came together for its own healing, what emerged was a renewal of faith that shines through each of these 11 effervescent tracks. Blending traditional and gospel styles with some modern flourishes -- jazzy strings here, a Caribbean melody line there -- Be Glad is an ideal blend. In addition to the title track, the collection also contains the Kirk Franklin-penned "My Life Is in Your Hands" and the powerful "This Is How It Feels to Be Free," written by Christian music trio Phillips, Craig & Dean. Be Glad is performed from the heart, and as such, it speaks to the heart of its listeners. Lisa Zhito, Barnes & Noble
