November 23, 2009:
I'd been waiting for what seemed like forever for John Mayer's next solo (not live) CD to come out after Continuum and was somewhat disappointed by Battle Studies, to be honest. His signature sound and guitar solos are there but it seems somewhat redundant. I find that the only really remarkable track is "Assassin" which I really do enjoy but other than that I find myself zoning out through the CD until it's over when I then think to myself "Oh. That's it?" I loved Continuum because I felt like it included a good mix of lyrical material but Battle Studies is pretty much the same song over 10 times (save the cover of Crossroads, which I like as well but I can't give him too much credit as it is a cover, after all).
Maybe I'm being a little harsh as I've listened to it only a handful of times but I can't really see myself finding it to be fantastic all of a sudden. It's John Mayer so it's really talented guitar-playing and sweet, lilting melodies but it's been done before.
