Editorial Reviews

Danny Elfman's Batman theme music had become a pop culture classic even before it was repeated in a parade of Bat sequels, proving to be every bit as enduring as John Williams' tunes from Star Wars, Superman, or Jaws. This is due not only to the film's box office success, but also to its hummability and its seemingly inevitable appropriateness for the dark superhero epic. The score is perhaps best remembered for its darkly sweeping strings and energetically unremitting blasts of brass, but there are also some quietly beguiling moments with piano, a boys choir, and a music box. Compared to other action movie scores, even the noisily foreboding music from the scenes of danger and battle are relatively listenable on CD. Darryl Cater, All Music Guide

July 16, 2008: Say what you want about Tim Burton's vision of the Caped Crusader, the choice of Danny Elfman to score both of his Bat-films was right on the money. Elfman's score for the 1989 ''Batman'' perfectly captures the Gothic feel of Burton's movie, but it's an incredibly beautiful score on its own, not least of which includes the eminently hummable ''Batman Theme.'' A definite must-own for any lover of film music.

July 15, 2004: This album inspires great amounts of different emotions in each of its recordings. If you need to be cheered up, or listen to a type or music that displays great dread this is it!
