About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Although Sweet Child is usually cited as the group's high watermark, Basket of Light finds Pentangle at their most progressive and exciting. Highlights of this album -- which actually reached the Top Five in the U.K. -- include the buzzing jazz dynamics of "Light Flight," their moving rendition of the traditional folk song "Once I Had a Sweetheart," their reinvention of the girl group smash "Sally Go Round the Roses," and "Springtime Promises," one of their finest original tunes. Starting in the year 2000, Basket of Light has been reissued in several different CD incarnations with four bonus tracks, two of which are outtakes of "Sally Go Round the Roses." Neither is vastly different in approach from the version on the finished album except in certain details of the playing and nuances in the singing, which will primarily be of interest to the most hardcore fans -- outtake number two will probably please more listeners, with its slightly more expressive approach in the vocalizing and the guitars. The other two songs, "Cold Mountain" and "I Saw an Angel," are previously unanthologized single B-sides that should have found a place on the original album, but are hardly earth-shattering additions. And those choosing the DualDisc version of this CD should also be aware of -- and perhaps beware -- the fact that those discs do not always read (or load) properly in some surprisingly advanced model CD players. ~ Richie Unterberger & Bruce Eder, All Music Guide All Music Guide

February 24, 2001: An infectious blend of folk and jazz, this is The Pentangle at their best. From the traditional folk song, House Carpenter, to a refreshing cover of The Jaynettes' Sally Go Round The Roses (1963), the group shows they can hold their own. They also turn in some great original material with Bert Jansch's ''Train Song'' and Jacqui McShee's ''Light Flight'', which opens the disc. Extraordinary acoustic bass work by Danny Thompson is complimented by the acoustic/electric guitar giants Bert Jasch and John Rebourn. Please check out their previous disc, ''Sweet Child'' and their fifth effort for Transatlantic, ''Solomon's Seal''.
