Editorial Reviews

Kathleen Battle's honeyed, golden soprano and the sparkling silver of Wynton Marsalis's trumpet are blended together in this splendid program of baroque arias -- an inspired act of musical alchemy. The virtuosity these artists display is absolutely breathtaking, with voice and instrument intertwined as they joyously bound into the stratosphere. Battle rattles off her runs and roulades just easily and with as much relish as Marsalis does. But equally awe-inspiring are the pieces in which exuberant exultation gives way to a quieter sort of rapture. With Battle and Marsalis flying so high, and with crisp accompaniment from the Orchestra of St. Luke's, there's never been a better reason to go for baroque! Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble

March 31, 2000: The technical brilliance of these artists is a genuine treat for Baroque lovers. And for individuals who have never heard Baroque music or those that have no particular love for it - be prepared to become a fan of this genre. There are moments in this recording when you will be certain that the long dead composers of this music are smiling down on this exceptional recording. You will be looking forward to Battle and Marsalis pairing up again! Brava!!!
