Editorial Reviews

After numerous years playing separately, Willie K and Eric Gilliom here combine for a set as the Barefoot Natives. The set is a mix of traditional pieces, contemporary pieces, and a couple of old covers. The mood is rather sedate, and though Willie K in particular has been noted for his dexterity and speed, the focus is on the ballad rather than on flights of guitar fantasy. That said, the duo does a nice job with the songs chosen, just putting out enough on the guitars to keep the listener interested, and more importantly, to bring out the richness of a song. The highlights here, despite the guitar mastery of the pair, are probably the most traditional works, which are also the lightest on guitar usage. Additionally, George Harrison's "Something" is given the proper treatment befitting a piece of musical royalty. Incoming fans may do well to pick up some of Willie K's solo work (or his work with Gilliom's sister, Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom) first, but this will certainly be a nice addition for fans. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi All Music Guide

September 27, 2010: Eric and the legendary Willi K are awesome in this debut album. If you like Hawaiian music, you got to pick this up. Mr. Gilliom is a fantastic musician and has played with Hapa. Catch him live at Mulligan's in Wailea every week with Barry Flanigan from Hapa.
