About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

During the period between his departure from Them and his masterpiece Astral Weeks, Van Morrison tenured with Bert Berns' Bang label, notching his biggest solo hit with the classic single "Brown Eyed Girl" and laying the groundwork for the transcendent material to follow. The Bang Masters compiles the best of his recordings for the label, and although a good part of it is negligible in comparison to Morrison's greatest work, it's still necessary listening for fans. The remarkable "T.B. Sheets" captures Morrison at his most emotionally shattering, while early attempts at "Beside You" and "Madame George" hint at the genius just around the corner. Everybody needs a little Brown Eyed Girlby JohnQ

July 07, 2009: It's true that the only essential song here is Brown Eyed Girl, but these early songs show the singer learning to be a Master. Besides, shouldn't everyone have a good copy of Brown Eyed Girl? As affordable as this CD is, there's no excuse to pass this one up.

I Also Recommend: Tupelo Honey [Bonus Tracks], Moondance.

March 10, 2009: A lot of this is forgettable. However, any Morrison fan should hear the wierd, brooding TB Sheets. I think it is more compelling than any of the songs on the much praised Astral Weeks. Beware: as another rewiewer noted, there are many discs of this material out there. This is an offical one and it does have interesting liner notes.
