About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Singer/songwriter Erykah Badu's Grammy-winning breakthrough 1997 debut, Baduizm, interrupted the monotonous sound of contemporary R&B with gentle lyrics and aching vocals layered over a bass heavy fusion of hip-hop and jazz grooves. Badu's sound was dubbed "retro soul" because her melancholy vocals drew comparisons to Billie Holiday but the deep, witty and often sassy lyrics of chart-topping singles such as "On & On," "The Other Side of the Game" and "Next Lifetime," clearly reflected a '90s feminist sensibility.
