About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

It's no coincidence that Billy Ray Cyrus' return to Tennessee happens the same week his daughter Miley leaves Hollywood for the homeland in the big-screen debut of Hannah Montana: taken together, the album and the film are a multimedia project about the Cyrus family's rejection of Hollywood for the heartland. Of course, this is all an act. The Cyruses aren't leaving Hollywood, not when Miley is one of the biggest stars in America, and Billy Ray isn't even from Tennessee, so this is all a charade. Then again, even at his prime, Billy Ray was never considered much more than a cartoon cowboy, scooting along with a near-novelty hit in "Achy Breaky Heart," so the studied calculation of Back to Tennessee doesn't necessarily ring false, even if his affected drawl certainly does on "He's Mine." That's not the only time that his exaggerated swagger strikes a sour note -- Cyrus never quite sounds right when he's raising hell as a "Thrillbilly," or when he's aping an outlaw on "Country as Country Can Be," or even when he's singing a syrupy, icky duet with Miley on "Butterfly Fly Away." Billy Ray sounds the best on Back to Tennessee when he doesn't dip too far in either direction, when he doesn't get too country or pop, when he does the kind of arena-country that made him a star back in 1992. This doesn't happen all that often -- it's on the minor-key shuffle "I Could Be the One" or the pumping "Love Is a Lesson" -- but when it does, the record serves up some goofy good times that nevertheless manage to puncture the entire conceit behind the album, not to mention its companion, Hannah Montana: The Movie. April 14, 2009: So many people out there like to bash billy ray and his music. How about the people that bash his music dont even listen to it I bet nor give it an honest chance. So many songs on this cd and hit potential. All of you billy ray haters I think you need to wake up and smell the roses. All of you critics like to bash his music because of one song and that was achy breaky heart. All of you haters take a look at this.

Billy Ray Cyrus broke through in 1992 with the 9x-platinum smash hit album "Some Gave All. Since then, he went on to sell more than 25 million albums worldwide, and earned nearly thirty chart singles, including 15 Top 40 charts hits. At the same time he established himself as a successful actor in film and television, first as the title character in the syndicated drama "Doc," then alongside his daughter Miley in the hit Disney Channel series "Hannah Montana." Cyrus' most recent album -- 2007's "Home At Last" -- entered in the Top 20 on the Billboard Top 200, hitting #3 on the Top Country Album chart, while "Ready, Set, Don't Go," a duet with daughter Miley, became a Top 5 country smash.

Off his cuttent cd the first single somebody said a prayer made a top 40 appearance hitting number 33. Back to tennessee is starting to gain popularity and air time due to the #1 movie in the country!!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it to all you billy ray haters. All I can say is that all of you haters dont know what good music is. How about openeing up your ears once in awhile and let good music filter in. I'm a loyal billy ray fan and thats all the facts about him.
