Building on the eclectic blend of standards and contemporary pop that made his big-label debut a swinging success, Matt Dusk mixes another "musical cocktail," as he puts it, on his sophomore album, Back in Town. Hard-driving, radio-ready mixes of the title track and "All About Me" start off the set with a bang. But then settle in for standards time, as Dusk channels Sinatra on big-band-backed cuts of "The Best Is Yet to Come," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "As Time Goes By." Bolstered by new arrangements from the great Sammy Nestico, Dusk stamps these classics with his own laid-back style and is at his best on the two Lerner & Loewe numbers from My Fair Lady, "Get Me to the Church on Time" and "On the Street Where You Live." (Nestico proclaimed the former one of his best charts ever -- no argument here.) Dusk rounds out the disc in the present tense with the pop ballad "A Million Kisses Late" and the country-tinged "Where Were You When," demonstrating once again that this smooth-voiced youngster excels in styles both classic and current.
