June 06, 2009: Arthur Grumiaux has mastered Bach's violin repertoire, regardless of whether it's the concerto, solo partita or the accompanied sonata with harpischord. Grumiaux intonation is smooth without being sentimental, sweet without being sappy and pure without being perfectionistic. I agree that this Grumiaux recording serves as the benchmark for judging each successive interpretation. Grumiaux takes it straight to the heart; he is not guilty of making subjective assumptions on how each piece should be played. Highly recommended for the classical music beginner's library!
