Editorial Reviews

The St. Matthew Passion is Bach's most monumental work, and this 1962 performance conducted by Otto Klemperer is the most monumental performance of the piece ever recorded. Surely Bach himself would have loved the stoic expressiveness of this interpretation which features some of the greatest singers of the postwar era. The Philharmonia Chorus was also at its peak in the early '60s, and they soar freely through Bach's complicated counterpoint, even at Klemperer's measured tempos. But what's most moving about this musical retelling of the Passion story is the intense spiritual atmosphere. It's dramatic, of course, but there's nothing theatrical about it -- just a steadfast, devout concentration. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble
