Christopher Franke's scores for the syndicated sci-fi cult classic Babylon 5 loom in sharp contrast to the music for the series' most obvious inspiration, Star Trek. Dark and ominous where Star Trek championed hope and wonder, it nevertheless captures the mysteries of space in vivid detail. The second half of the two-part episode "War Without End" boasts some of Franke's most beautifully human and melancholy moments to date -- "Delenn in Love" and "Delenn Leaves" capture the wistful resignation of the aged character, while "Babylon 4 Transfer" eschews the series' trademark electronics for woodwinds and harps. That's not to suggest Franke abandons action and suspense, however: "Babylon 4 Disappears" and "Time Travel Arrival" rank among the series' most visceral themes. Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
