"Keep it simple, stupid" is a philosophy that has driven more than one Hollywood blockbuster. It's not unheard of in rock 'n' roll, either, as in the case of Smash Mouth, an unashamedly good-time, proudly untrendy, goof-rock band. After bouncing up the charts with FUSH YU MANG's "Walkin' on the Sun" in the summer of '97, Smash Mouth could've just divvied up the royalty checks and disappeared. Instead, they returned with ASTRO LOUNGE, which zigs, zags, and zings through another passel of ditties, each aimed squarely at the pleasure center. Sure, the novelty tag fits tracks like the hit single "All Star," but there's no disputing the one-listen-and-you're-hooked catchiness of the ska-flavored "When the Morning Comes" and the glammy cruncher "Diggin' Your Scene." Thankfully, Smash Mouth haven't started to take things seriously enough to insert words like "progress" or "conceptual" into their artistic lexicon -- and that purity of essence makes ASTRO LOUNGE a cool, easily digested summer treat.
