If the word lovely could be used to describe a disc of music by Arnold Schoenberg, it would be with this recording of the Austrian composer's complete piano works performed by Peter Serkin. The son of the great Rudolf Serkin, Peter is truly to the manner born, and his technical excellence seem to come as naturally to him as his interpretive insights. Serkin dispatches the tremendously difficult Bewegt from the Drei Klavierstücke with an effortlessness that nearly defies belief. More importantly, Serkin also gets beneath the skin of Schoenberg's thorny music, finding all the emotional nuances, and the beauty as well. Serkin's reading of the Suite is less about strict serialism and more about the wit, charm and warmth of the composer's neo-classical settings. His concluding Waltzer from the Fünf Klavierstücke is achingly nostalgic, while his concluding Sehr langsam from the Sechs Kleine Klavierstücke is sublimely serene. The CD demonstrates that Schoenberg wrote some amazingly beautiful music. Arcana's digital sound is a bit close and a tad dry, but still very realistic. Jim Leonard, All Music Guide
