This is an extraordinary vocal recital. Mixed programs such as these can sometimes seem like a jumble, but Karita Mattila's astonishing versatility makes up for any lack of organizational coherence. Just put on Track 6 and bask in the Verdian warmth she radiates in Amelia's luscious aria, "Come in quest'ora bruna" (Simon Boccanegra), then savor the intense poignancy of her Jenufa (the title role in Janácek's opera). In fact, in everything here -- from Puccini's Manon to Wagner's Sieglinde to Lehar's Merry Widow -- Mattila sounds right at home. Her Tchaikovsky (Lisa in Pique Dame) has a sharp dramatic edge, as well as a sinewy emotional texture that brings the character to life, even in this isolated context. Ideally, one might want a Sieglinde with more vocal heft, although it's a rare treat to hear this role sung with such svelte-sounding freshness. Mattila's Elsa (Lohengrin) is well-nigh perfect, however, offering both bright-eyed innocence and a doom-laden shadow of darkness. The London Philharmonic sounds terrific here under Yutaka Sado, although they often seem unable to match Mattila's ardor. A memorable recital, nevertheless -- and it leaves one hungry for more.
