About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Sitar legend Ravi Shankar figures predominantly on ANOUSHKA: He produced the album, composed the ragas, and created the musician, too. His daughter Anoushka, 18 years old when this record was made, is the only sitar player to be trained exclusively by the master. She has toured extensively with him and in July 1999 was honored by the British Parliament for her artistry and musicianship. On her debut solo album, Anoushka offers five ragas, with original poetry, on the themes of earth, water, fire, air, and love. The first piece, "Bairagi," more than 20 minutes long, is leisurely, romantic, and melodic. On "Tilak Shyam," Anoushka shows she can maintain a blistering pace, accompanied by the lively gait of the tabla. "Kirwani" begins with wafts as enticing as the seductive fingers of incense and then works up to an ecstatic frenzy. ANOUSHKA is a brilliant illustration of the raga form -- with helpful liner notes to introduce the centuries-old tradition for newcomers -- and radiantly shows off this young musician's engaging performance style.
