About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Sarah Brightman, one of England's most incandescent musical exports, is an internationally beloved performer and recording artist as well as the ex-wife and muse of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the fabulously successful theater composer. Here, Brightman, who has yet to completely consolidate her star status in the Colonies, utilizes her elegant, crystal-blue soprano on definitive versions of the maestro's greatest hits, culled from such landmarks as "Cats," "Evita" and "The Phantom of the Opera." The legendary showstoppers -- "Memory," "Don't Cry For Me Argentina," "The Music Of The Night" -- have rightfully earned Brightman her diva's stripes but it's the less familiar, and less grandiose, tunes like the romantically operatic "Chanson d'Enfance" and coyly assertive "Love Changes Everything" from "Aspects of Love" and the pastorally reflective "Unexpected Song" from "Song & Dance" that provide the chanteuse welcome opportunities to reveal the considerable heart behind her formidable technique. September 28, 2001: ... is to give this CD a chance. This was one of those CD's I bought without knowing whether I would like it: usually I live to regret it when I do that, but this was an exception. I had only heard Sarah sing in clips on BN.com and such, and didn't know whether I liked ALW or not. I really like this CD and I highly recommend it. There are four songs from the Phantom of the Opera, but it is not wasted time to hear them even if you own the soundtrack. ''The Phantom of the Opera'' is the same as on the soundtrack, but the others are different. For example, Sarah sings ''All I Ask of You'' with Cliff Richards and not Steve Barton, and ''Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again'' has a different ending (very beautiful repeated phrase). Of course Sarah also has a distinctive way of interpreting ''The Music of the Night'' which is very moving. ''Unexpected Song'' is one of the songs I always skip when I listen to this CD. Although it is an amazing song and very emotional, and I used to love it. ''Chanson d'Enfance'' is in French and one of my favourites. Sarah also sings ''Another Suitcase in Another Hall'' and ''Don't Cry For Me Argentina'' from ''Evita''. These also are very good. ''Amigos Para Siempre'' with Jos? Carreras is lovely, and ''Love Changes Everything'' is another favourite of mine. Sarah's interpretation of ''Memory'' is tearworthy, it is so beautiful. It is one of my favourite songs in the world - so gentle, yet full of power. I didn't care for either of the other songs from ''Cats'' (the musical doesn't intrigue me particularly, only ''Memory''). ''Tell Me On a Sunday'' and ''Anything But Lonely'' don't particularly stand out to me but are very pretty. And of course there is ''Pie Jesu'' which is haunting and wonderful. Sarah's voice is one which can fill the heart with real emotion - one can identify with it in any mood and time and be refreshed by it as well.
