This timeless classic combines the best of two New Age music pioneers: composer/keyboard player Steven Halpern and harpist Georgia Kelly. Both artists have notable solo albums (check out Halpern's groundbreaking SPECTRUM SUITE and Kelly's anthology, PERENNIALS), but ANCIENT ECHOES showcases the best of both artists. The music for this album was improvised one magical California evening in 1978, when the New Age movement was still in its infancy and spiritual discovery was a "true calling." These stately pieces -- inspired by the religions of ancient civilizations and performed in exotic musical modes from Greece and Asia -- seem to transport you to ceremonial temples. On the gently suspenseful title track, Halpern chants hauntingly behind Kelly's concert harp. "Apollo's Lyre" is a delicate interplay between Kelly and Halpern's bell-toned clarion. "From Eleusis," featuring Halpern on echoed flute, is a tad unsettling, but this gentle uneasiness is conducive to soul-searching. The two "Dharma Duets" evoke the magic of a Chinese garden. Unique is the pre-echo technique of "Crotona"; the notes shimmer before the melody like a butterfly mirage. This analog album (enhanced for CD reproduction) predates MIDI technology, but the music doesn't need technical trickery. Without mixing consoles or high-tech computers, Halpern and Kelly created ravishingly beautiful music that captures the heart of spiritual authenticity. Carol Wright, Barnes & Noble
