About this Artist

About This Item

The celebrated tenor Plácido Domingo marks another remarkable chapter with Amore Infinito, the recording he calls "one of the most important" of his career. With lyrics in English, Italian, and Spanish, Amore Infinito features songs inspired by poems written by the late Pope John Paul II. In addition to his solo work on the album, Domingo also collaborates with some of the most exciting vocal talents in music, including Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Vanessa Williams, and Katherine Jenkins. The CD also features a moving duet with Domingo's son, Plácido Jr.

It was after Domingo's last performance for John Paul II at the Vatican that the tenor expressed to His Holiness a wish to select some of his poems for musical setting. The singer, along with a group of prominent composers, looked for themes of universal significance to accompany melodies that evoke deep emotions and a timeless spirituality. Celebrating the eternal power of love, the album is utterly contemporary. "This recording has enormous significance for me," says Domingo.

The Deluxe Edition of the album includes an enhanced CD with video footage featuring Josh Groban and is packaged in a 40-page hard-cover booklet with lyrics and color photographs.

July 27, 2009: The disc opens with "Love", a tender duet between Domingo and his son, Plácido, Jr. - and with that precedent, the tone of the collection is set. Starting with a battery of powerful duets (four of the first six tracks are as such), the album gradually moves into a calmer, more contemplative mood as the tracks progress. Far from making the work inaccessible to those limited to English, the predominance of Romance languages stands as a testament to the ecumenical attitude of His Holiness John Paul II, not to mention his prodigious skill with language. The strongest tracks, in this listener's opinion, are "Risuona Anima Mia", "Canto del Sole Inesauribile", and "Gratitude". Highly recommended for listeners - of both religious and more secular natures - that are attracted to an operatic voice and a genuinely outstanding performance.

Absolutely stirring and beautiful music...it's a shame there are no translations to the songs in Itaby Anonymous

July 02, 2009: I love the music on this CD; it's breathtaking and the soloists are exceptional! I just wish there was a translation page included in the CD so that I would know what the words in English are. Some of the songs are in English, but most aren't, and so though the music is stirring and beautifully done, there is no way to know what is being said! Too bad...
