Editorial Reviews

As an epic, shameless tribute to teen horniness and the never-ending quest to get laid, AMERICAN PIE hearkens back to the heyday of teen sex farces nearly two decades ago. And it also, like its forebears, comes with a pumped up soundtrack that's built for success. Replete with songs that ooze that post-punk-pop feel, AMERICAN PIE taps into that time-proven, winning formula of teen-angst-you-can-dance-to: Third Eye Blind leads the way with its hooky single, "New Girl;" Sugar Ray's cut, "Glory" is a change of pace featuring dance club beats, a slightly off-kilter lead vocal and even hip-hop scratching; Super Transatlantic adds a solid love song with a modern pessimistic sensibility in "Super Down;" and New Zealand pop star Bic Runga contributes a song, "Sway," that suggests the recent hits of Natalie Imbruglia. For those more cynical sorts, never fear, you'll still find plenty of nods to teenage self-loathing in tunes like The Loose Nuts' "Wishen." Donald Gray, Barnes & Noble
