On this third addition to the Ally McBeal soundtrack series, Vonda Shepard stays true to her somewhat retro-leaning fictional role as the house performer at Ally's favorite after-work bar by veering toward material by '70s singer-songwriters including Carole King ("Home Again"), Gilbert O'Sullivan ("Alone Again [Naturally]"), and Todd Rundgren ("Can We Still Be Friends"). But what sets this Ally disc apart from its predecessors is the inclusion of several guest performers, such as cast member Robert Downey Jr., whose Phil Collins-flavored vocal style complements Shepard's throaty vocals on the duet "Chances Are." Downey also holds his own with Sting in yet another rendition of "Every Breath You Take," but the less said about "Snakes," the actor's self-penned solo contribution, the better. Where Downey falters, however, the great Al Green succeeds, as he pleads his way through his classic reworking of the Bee Gees' hit "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." Likewise, Tina Turner -- who, like Green, has appeared on the TV series -- triumphantly chugs through the bouncy "When the Heartache Is Over." With music this enjoyable, it's no wonder that Vonda and Ally are a match made in network television heaven. Dave Gil de Rubio Barnes & Noble
