Editorial Reviews

All American premiered in 1962 as Charles Strouse and Lee Adams' follow-up to their highly successful Bye Bye Birdie, with the book written by Mel Brooks. While All American is comparable to Bye Bye Birdie in approach, it is less impressive and was not as well regarded by audiences (it closed after only 80 performances). The story follows a man who comes to America to teach engineering, but instead manages to teach the football team to win. There are high points to be found here, but not enough to fill an entire show. Ray Bolger, Eileen Herlie, Ron Husmann and Fritz Weaver appear on this original Broadway cast recording. Sarah Erlewine, All Music Guide
