This disc is something of a musical travelogue -- a collection of evocative miniatures from all over Central and South America. Guitarist David Russell has already proved himself a superb exponent of the Spanish style, and here he captures a stunning variety of folkloric accents, from the breezy rhythms of Jorge Morel's "Danza Brazilera" to the melancholy harmonies of Jorge Cardoso's "Milonga" (a lyrical version of the traditional Argentinian dance). Few of the names on this collection will be known to any but the most fervent fans of Latin American guitar music, which means that Aire Latino is also a journey of discovery. Certainly, the range of characters and moods keeps one's ears and heart fully engaged. Highlights include Eduardo Falú's songful, twangy "La Quartielera," João Pernambuco's playful, almost ragtime-ish "Rebolico," and the invigorating strumming of Antonio Lauro's "Seis por derecho." Actually, there's not a dud among the 21 tracks, and while Russell has made some fine recordings over the years, this is arguably his sweetest and most lovable yet. Indeed, it's the kind of album that one wants to listen to compulsively. Now, let's just hope there's a second volume in the works. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble
