About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

With the boundless harmonies and melodies of vintage Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway floating through his Afro-coiffed head, newcomer Musiq Soulchild summons the creative roots of '70s soul music. But like his neo-soul contemporaries D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill, Musiq gives the music of his forebears a new-jack twist on his debut, Aijuswanaseing. He cross-pollinates classic soul with a variety of sounds -- gospel on the spirited ballad "You Be Alright," hip-hop on "L' Is Gone," which includes a live band interpretation of the kick-drum driven beat of the Roots' "Next Movement," and jam-session funk on a remake of the Patrice Rushen classic "Settle for My Love." From the carefree lead single "Sunny (Just Friends)" (which appeared on the Nutty Professor II soundtrack) to the playful "Girl Next Door" -- which was cowritten by fellow Philadelphian Jill Scott -- the 23-year-old scores major points with the ladies with sweet sentiments such as "If there's anything that you want, you need/Don't be afraid to ask 'cause you're my girl." With Aijuswanaseing, Musiq not only honors the soulful good vibe of his favorites, he also contributes to the next wave of soul classics, which should in turn influence another generation of inspired musicians. March 10, 2003: Personally this song has got a brother through a couple of bad relationships. If you cannot relate to the realness and the authentic emotion Musiq displays on each track you have never truly been in love. Hands down the hottest song on the album is Mary Go Round... listen 2 the second verse. This album is a definite classic cop it enjoy it

April 19, 2002: Musiq is by far my favorite R&B male. I really appreciate his staying away from ''booty R&B'' and instead injecting some real soul into his cuts. This is an album you can put on with your girl and not worry about havin to get off the couch to hit to forward button on your cd player. I had the opportuniy to see Musiq, and he plays live with turntables. I appreciate that cross genre flavor he gets when he throws a little hip hop in. Definite must buy, cause you guys no aint no girl feelin it when you're bumpin hip-hop when she's in the car. I can't wait for Juslisen to drop, I think it comes out the first week of May!
