Among the many mix CDs released by Kinkysweet during the mid-2000s, such as the long-running Bargrooves series, for instance, the San Francisco volume of the Afterdark series stands out as a cut above the rest. Granted, most Kinkysweet mixes are good, if not at times great, but the San Francisco volume of the Afterdark series is uniformly great, drawing directly from two of the West Coast's premier house music labels of the early 2000s: Transport and OM. Moreover, the tracks are selected and mixed by professional DJs who know those two catalogs as well as anyone. The first disc, which is comprised of mainly Transport tracks, is handled by DJ MFR, the label's founder. He lays down a number of his label's best, including five Miguel Migs productions (nearly half the disc!). The second disc, the OM one, is handled by David Ireland, who has been a longtime fan of the label since day one and, more notably, is the publisher of BPM Magazine. He doesn't spin a greatest-hits mix, instead going for a moody midtempo set peppered with highlights. Individually, these two discs are both wonderful showcases of the respective labels on display, and together in this well-designed package they are a fitting combination, offering two slightly different perspectives of West Coast house music at its finest and most acknowledged.
