About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

You can sum up Raul Malo's second covers album in one word: "countrypolitan." Paying homage to the lush productions of Billy Sherrill and Owen Bradley, the onetime Mavericks frontman focuses on a country music that's almost diametrically opposed to the rootin'-tootin' honky-tonk sound of his old outfit. Malo, whose impeccable pipes are a modern-day equivalent of Nashville Sound regulars Jim Reeves or Charlie Pride, dips into crooner mode on these sophisticated productions of much rougher source material: two from Hank ("Cold Cold Heart" and "Take These Chains From My Heart"), two from Dwight ("Pocket of a Clown" and "It Only Hurts Me When I Cry") as well as songs identified with Ray Price and Elvis Presley. Not everyone loves the plush, mid-tempo swing of the Nashville Sound (Chet Atkins called it "the sound of money"), but fans of Patsy Cline and her ilk are sure to be swept up, up, and away by Malo's manly take on country's softest strains. July 31, 2007: Raul Malo and his incredible voice have found a way to highlight the beauty of the melody and deliver the message of the lyrics to open a non-country fans' ears to some fabulous songs. His take on these gems is simple and clear - his band is wonderful and the addition of Jim Hoke (LOVE the clarinet!) rounds out the 10 great cuts. I've been devouring this album since the 7/17 release and am finding my favorite jumping from song to song. If you're a country fan - listen and hear the beauty of these songs. If you're not a country fan - listen and hear the beauty of these songs.

July 31, 2007: Marvelous collection of some country standards, reinterpreted with a smoky late-night vibe. Buy copies for yourself and all your friends. You (and they) will be glad you did! (And if you ever get the chance to see Raul and his band live, GO!!! Trust me on this one.)
