Editorial Reviews

Buda Musique follows up its landmark first volume of Africavision with a second, even finer set for Africavision, Vol. 2: 50 Years of African Cinema. Here are the soundtrack themes and songs from a whopping half-century of film soundtracks, most of which has been unheard -- and unseen -- outside that continent or France. Beginning with the title track from the documentary Afrique sur Seine in 1961 to the lush, romantic juju music of "Coubésiban" (from the drama Baara), to the loop-driven, zulu pop of "Binon," (from Maral Tanie), this is a dynamite listen. There are copious notes in the set which provide an education of not only the music, but on African cinema as well. Pick up both volumes and let's hope the series continues.
