Mali's Super Rail Band got their start as the hotel band at the Buffet Hotel, which was located in capital city Barnako's busy railway center, and from the start the band's lineup was anchored by the amazing guitar playing of Djelimady Tounkara and the complementary saxophone lines of Kabiné Keita. Blending a Mande-Cuban mix with elements of blues, rock, rhumba, and reggae, the Rail Band crafted Afro-pop well before the term even existed. The group's first singer was Salif Keita, and after Keita departed for Les Ambassadeurs, he was replaced by Mory Kanté, who is featured here on this collection of early Rail Band classics. Highlights include Tounkara's stunning guitar work on the 13-plus-minute "Walenumalömbaliya" and the undeniably funky "Dugu Kamelemba." Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
