Editorial Reviews

Somewhere between Van Morrison at his sloppy-drunkest and a post-punk skiffle band at a football riot stands (barely) Shane MacGowan, whose wild-boy growling and toothless delivery don't disguise the occasional obscenity (even on the instrumentals!) on this in-your-face live set. Thankfully, the onetime Pogues frontman is backed here by his Popes, cheerfully maniacal but tight enough to keep Shane-o from falling off the stage entirely. By a strange quirk of public health, Dublin celebrated St. Patrick's in May last year, apparently so that MacGowan could work his peculiar St. Paddy's magic on both sides of the pond, as this extremely live recording has nailed down for posterity. Between his Pogues-era hits such as "If I Should Fall from Grace with God" and "Fairytale of New York," he interjects traditional favorites like "Nancy Whiskey" and "The Irish Rover," liberally lacing originals and hallowed standards alike with the carefully crafted anti-glamour that comes from being on speaking terms with the barroom floor of life. It's not for the fainthearted. But if it's a real Irish Saturday night on the rough side you're hankering for, this take-away from "rockin' boppin' lunatic" MacGowan may be just your dish. November 14, 2002: If your a fan of traditional Irish music or Irish rock, you better sit down before pressing play. Typical of Shane MacGowan's style, this CD exudes energy. In a way that people familiar with traditional Irish music will appreciate and people who are new to the genre, this will fill you with a sense of Irish pride and energy only Shane MacGowan can elicite.
