ABC Music, the two-disc, 32-track compilation of Stereolab's BBC Radio 1 sessions from July 1991 to August 2001, is a surprisingly illuminating and listenable set. Although this may come as a shock to some casual listeners, Stereolab can be a ferocious live band, and their trademark blend of Krautrock, easy listening, and Brazilian influences (in different proportions throughout their career) usually has an added aggressiveness in a live setting. This is particularly apparent on the earliest tracks, including an outstanding version of their early signature tune "Super Electric" on which the Neu!-like motorik pulse is buttressed by some almost punky guitar work by co-leader Tim Gane. Several tracks appear in embryonic versions, with a very different early take of "Seeperbold" called "Working Title (The Pram Song)" of particular interest. The familiar songs tend to sound more stripped-down here; "International Colouring Contest" loses its samba-like beat but gains a more heartfelt vocal from Laetitia Sadier, who also steps away from her usual deadpan on glorious revisions of the rarity "Brigitte" and the 1996 single "Cybele's Reverie," which sounds just as catchy and propulsive without the studio version's full orchestral setting. April 10, 2005: I'm an early adopter of Stereolab. I bought "Transient Random Noise Bursts with Announcements" and "Mars Audiac Quintet" at the time "MAQ" was released (1994). Then I quickly obtained "Switched On", "Peng", "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music" and I was an instant collector. I bought everything, and the last thing I bought was the "Cobra and Phases Group" CD. Health and family problems caused me to abandon my musical pursuits. Later, I lost all my CDs. So, for years, I lost touch with this wonderful, amazing band. Just a few weeks ago, I went to Barnes & Noble and decided to catch up with Stereolab. I saw this, "ABC Music" and rejoiced to see so many of my favorite early, Velvet Underground inspired songs on it, like "Lo Boob Oscillator", "Peng 33", "Changer", "Wow and Flutter", "Les Yper Sound"--triumphant, put a smile on your face, bounce up and down, cheerful, happy but intellectual and social conscience music. A double CD with BBC Studio 1 tracks seemed like a dream come true. What a way to catch up with Stereolab. I was not familiar with "Laissez Faire" one of the best and most drivingly joyous tracks. I cannot conceive of how any rock fan could not be blown away by this collection. This is not their trippy beatnik jazzy lounge music of "Cobra and Phases" period, rather, it's the hard driving, straight ahead rock material, with the sweet haunting cherubic female vocal stylings that made Stereolab unique and delicious. This is the first Stereolab CD you should get if you don't know the band and want a taste of some of their best rock, with some electronic experimentation sounds (mooginess) mixed in.
