The first VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS recording, released in 1987, was a benefit album for the Special Olympics and their efforts to provide year-round sports training and competitions for mentally retarded children and adults in more than 140 countries. This year's release, volume 4, documents a live concert that ran the gamut from Run-DMC's rousing "Christmas in Hollis" and Jon Bon Jovi's "Please Come Home for Christmas" to Tracy Chapman's tranquil "O Holy Night" and Vanessa Williams's "What Child Is This." In the spirit of holiday togetherness, Eric Clapton and Sheryl Crow share the mike on a playful "Merry Christmas Baby"; Clapton and John Popper deliver a "Christmas Blues"; Crow and Mary J Blige are "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"; and the whole gang chimes in for a spirited "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." A Very Special Christmas, Vol. 4: Live continues the Very Special Christmas series, which benefits the Special Olympics. This volume was recorded live in Washington, D.C. and features performances by Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Run-D.M.C., Jon Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Vanessa Williams, and Tracy Chapman. Blige and Crow duet on "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," while Bon Jovi performs two lovelorn holiday songs -- "Please Come Home for Christmas" and "Christmas, Baby Please Come Home." Clapton teams up with Chapman on a version of her hit "Give Me One Reason," and with Crow on "Merry Christmas Baby." Run-D.M.C. performs "Christmas in Hollis," and Vanessa Williams turns in a rendition of "What Child Is This."
