On this all-star tribute to the King of Western Swing, Ray Benson's Asleep at the Wheel provides enthusiastic backing for some of country's top names -- the fiddles whine, the beat bounces, and the stars enjoy the chance to wear a different Resistol. Highlights include George Strait's exuberant take on "Big Ball's in Cowtown," Garth Brooks's swinging version of "Deep Water," and Merle Haggard's heartfelt "I Wonder If You Feel the Way I Do." On the whole, tribute albums have been dubious, largely forgettable affairs. This one is the exception, and warranted by the long shadow its subject casts over American music.
