Stephen Sondheim must be one of the most anthologized Broadway composers, his shows having been cannibalized into several revues, re-conceived musicals, and concert performances. This is a particularly good one. It is a concert featuring a cast of eight, among them Cris Groenendaal, Bob Gunton, George Hearn, and Angela Lansbury, recorded in 1983 and featuring songs written for shows ranging from Sondheim's unproduced first effort, Saturday Night, to what was then his latest, Merrily We Roll Along. Particularly notable are the songs cut from shows, such as "There's Something About a War" from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. The composer himself turns up toward the end to play piano for Lansbury on "Send in the Clowns" and help sing "Old Friends." [The original two-LP set released in 1983 (CBL2-4745) contained 21 selections. When the album was released on CD in 1994 (09026-61174-2), two songs, "Fear No More" and "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow," were cut to keep the time down to the limits of one CD.] William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

July 23, 2005: "A Stephen Sondheim Evening" is fantastic in every way! All of the singers have great voices, the arrangements are beautiful, and the song selections are so varied that the music keeps one's interest from beginning to end. Most of the songs on this disc were new to me, but now after hearing it there are only more Stephen Sondheim songs I love. Although only accompanied by a piano, synthesizer, bass, and percussion, I enjoyed the songs from "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" a lot more on this CD than on cast recordings with full orchestras. Song Highlights include: "Isn't it?", "What more do I need?", "With so little to be sure of", "Pretty little picture", "The House of Marcus Lycus", "Echo Song", "Johanna", "Not a day goes by", and "Old friends". The two best songs are performed by Judy Kaye: "Another Hundred People" and the showstopping "Being Alive". I was very happy that Cris Groenendaal performs on this CD- he has one of the most beautiful singing voices I have ever heard. I only wish Cris had more solos- "Johanna" is his only solo, but he is featured on "Saturday Night", "Someone in a Tree", and is the lead singer on "There's something about a war". The songs on "A Stephen Sondheim Evening" are fun, funny, rich, dramatic, and very beautiful. This recording is a MUST-HAVE for any Stephen Sondheim fan!
