Though shorn of the more overtly shoegazer-styled elements of their debut A Storm in Heaven, the Verve's sophomore effort A Northern Soul is no less epic in scope, forging a heavier, more traditionally psychedelic sound infused with a chaotic energy which mirrors the emotional upheaval at the heart of Richard Ashcroft's songs. Reportedly produced under the influence of excessive drug use, the album is harrowingly intense, its darkly hypnotic momentum steered by Nick McCabe's spiraling guitar leads and Ashcroft's incantatory vocals; tracks like the remarkable "On Your Own," "So It Goes," and the majestically morose "History" are searing evocations of isolation and desperation, soaring yet heartbreaking anthems of disillusionment and loss. December 17, 2001: an album that messes with your mind!! the heartbreaking History, full of rich lovely strings and even lovelier words, the defiant, soul challenging title track A Northern Soul...the intense struggle for love and the will to live all explained through the brilliant lyrics combined with the grooves you wanna get up and dance to and the mellower tracks you'll at least sway your head to...all i can say is, it's a must buy!

March 12, 2001: Foreshadowing the greatness to come in the form of Urban Hymns, A Northern Soul is a must have for any true rock music fan. There is plenty of spaced out guitars for all the old heads, and songs like On Your Own And History are far superior to their two direct descendants on Hymns(sonnet and DDW). Other hightlights include Life's An Ocean which has some of SJ's best bass to date, and This Is Music (title says it all). Ashcroft is nowadays a decent solo artist, and McCabe is AWOL, so this is one of the few chances you'll have to hear the magic they made TOGETHER. It cannot, and will not, be replicated until they make amends. Here's one fan hoping they will
