Editorial Reviews

When Bob Dylan introduced folk audiences to his music to in the 1960s, his yearning, political, humorous, tuneful, and deeply affecting songs helped define an era and inspired legions of fans to become musicians. He made it look easy. It wasn't, which is why four decades later he remains one the most important singer-songwriters of the modern era. Just about every songwriter to make any headway since his emergence owes Dylan a nod of thanks, and this tribute album gives a handful of folks the chance do so in song.Red House Records, based in Dylan's home state of Minnesota, brings together its best folk and blues artists to pay homage to Dylan's songs. Iowa singer/songwriter Greg Brown grins his way through a lowdown, bluesy "Pledging My Time"; Canada¹s Hart-Rouge translates "With God on Our Side" into French; and Ramblin¹ Jack Elliott, who inspired Dylan during his early years, sings "Don¹t Think Twice, It¹s All Right" with great tenderness. Lucy Kaplansky, Peter Ostrousko, Suzzy and Maggie Roche, and others prove that times may have changed, but the power of Dylan¹s music hasn¹t dimmed a bit. Instead, it glows brighter with every new artist it inspires. Amy Weivoda, Barnes & Noble
