Editorial Reviews

Pat Metheny's new CD, A MAP OF THE WORLD, is a soundtrack and then some. Stylistically reminiscent of the earlier Metheny classics NEW CHAUTAUQUA and AS FALLS WITCHITA, SO FALLS WITCHITA FALLS, this new release, with its acoustic guitar emphasis, highlights the guitarist's skills as both a compelling instrumentalist and an evocative composer. Alongside Metheny, who also handles piano and electric keyboards, are his longtime bassist Steve Rodby and veteran percussionist David Samuels, though many of the songs feature Metheny as a solo guitarist with only an orchestral backing. The film "A Map of the World" is about a family's hardships on a farm in rural Wisconsin. Metheny's lyrical, highly melodic music evokes the spirit of the heartland, capturing its wide-open spaces, and the sense of longing and loss of those who work the land. A MAP OF THE WORLD may not swing in the true jazz sense, but it seduces you with lush orchestrations and Metheny's brilliant playing. Don Bergenty, Barnes & Noble
